Big Mountain 2000 Review
Wax up your favorite high-performance skis or your totally rad snowboard and show us your stuff in this hot new game by SouthPeak Interactive, made only for Nintendo 64!
When you first start playing Big Mountain 2000, you'll be able to choose between six different racers: Hans Holzmann, Janet Brown, Jimmy Smith, Cherie Cheng, Ippei Hayami and Clair Winslet!
Each racer has a total of 16 ability points that are divided differently between Speed, Cornering, Damage, and Acceleration. There is also one point allocated to the Cool category. These abilities can be increased according to how well you perform in each race. Be sure to make all the cool stunts you can when you jump because higher Cool levels help you to earn more ability increases!
You'll also be choosing the gear that your racer will wear. Pay close attention to your racer's abilities so that you pick gear that your racer will be able to use effectively. When your racer's status increases from Amateur to Semi-Pro, you will be able to select better gear. Once you enter Pro status, even better gear becomes available.
Big Mountain 2000 offers three thrilling modes of play: Championship, Two Player Battle, and Time Attack. You'll compete against three computer-controlled racers in the Championship mode. You will be able to increase your abilities if you perform well and if you give those bad boys some real competition!
Once you have improved your racer's stats the Championship mode, you'll be ready to pit your skills against a friend in 2P Battle!
If you have a need for speed, check out Time Attack where you will race against the clock for the best speed record!
No matter what mode of play you choose, be sure to pay close attention to the on-screen information during the race if you want to finish with a peak performance!
There are also three modes of Racing: Free Ride, Slalom, and Giant Slalom. In Free Ride your goal is to get to the bottom of the trail as quickly as you can. Sounds easy but you will find scads of obstacles in your way and hitting any of those will slow you down drastically! If the Time-Out Counter goes to zero before you reach the finish line, you are out of the race! Passing Checkpoints along the trail will add precious seconds to the Time-Out Counter.
Your goal in Slalom is to go through all the slalom gates marked by red and yellow flags. You'll want to make it through the gates consecutively so you can rack up seconds to add to the Time-Out Counter.
Giant Slalom is just like Slalom but the gates are farther apart so your speed will build up quickly. That may sound like a good thing but the faster you go, the easier it is to miss a gate! You'll need to make it through all the gates so you can add time to the Time-Out Counter or you will run out of time and be out of the race.
There are three games for every stage of play and each of the stages gets increasingly harder. If you win the gold medal on both skis and snowboard in every game of every stage, you will unlock a bonus fourth stage will even greater thrills, spills and surprises. Clear this bonus fourth stage and you can race on mirror courses of all four previous stages!
There are a couple of really cool features to this game that add to player enjoyment. Instant Replay lets you watch how well (or how bad) you did on your latest race. This is a really cool way to learn from your mistakes! You can also design your own gear, including both equipment and clothing.
Big Mountain 2000 offers 15 different Background Tunes and 64 sound effects. From the OPTIONS Screen, you can toggle the background music on and off, check out all the game music and sounds and copy or delete racers. It's a really good idea to save your racer to a Controller Pak if you have spent a lot of time building that racer's abilities up.
This game is rated E for Everyone and is compatible with N64 Controller Pak and N64 Rumble Pak.
